Chapter 13 - Zel

5 years later

ZEL CAUGHT SCENT OF the woman long before she reached the guarded border of Galith’s camp. The other Nephilim were all younger, less powerful. He doubted any of them had detected her yet, so he mounted his dragon and barked instructions:

“I’m scouting westward. Alone. Do not follow. I will return before sunrise.”

His underling nodded. “As you say, Right Hand of Galith.”

Zel wanted to reach the woman before the others caught her scent. They would want her, would demand her. As a good commander Zel would be compelled to grant them this. And perhaps he would return with her, after he’d had his way. Nevertheless, he wanted to find out first for himself why a human woman would venture so far beyond Agveh’s protection.

He reached her as the moon approached its zenith. She dismounted her dark mare and knelt with her forehead to the ground.

Zel spoke. “Who are you? What business do you have in Thul’s domain?”

The woman spoke without rising. “I am Mara, a priestess of Dorshai, and I come to offer you information.”

“Stand.” Zel swung from the back of his dragon and approached her. “Look at me.”

She did as he commanded, trying to hide any sign of fear or weakness.

“Why would you betray your mistress? Why would you risk the wrath of your master? Do you not fear Agveh?”

Mara did not try to hide her contempt. “Agveh has grown weak. I have served him, have pledged my life in service of his daughter, and still they do nothing to help grant my vengeance.”

Zel laughed. “A human male has wronged you and now you want him dead.”

She nodded. “But it is not as simple as that. The wound is an old one, which I thought repaid. My husband gave my place to a slave-girl, so I had her poisoned during childbirth. I assumed the offspring died with her, but was mistaken. When I discovered this I sought my vengeance anew. I vowed to kill both offspring and eventually their father. I even delivered his son into Dorshai’s hands, thinking she would use him up then allow me to sacrifice him on Agveh’s altar. But she has not. She has even come to favor him over me, and this I cannot abide.”

Zel reached out a hand and cupped her face. “Give me your information. If it is good, then I will let you live. You will return to Dorshan and continue to relay information to me here, at this very spot. Never go any further eastward or my warriors will find you, and I’ll have to let them at you. Unlike Agveh’s useless vassals, the servants of Thul know how to treat their own.”

“If that is true, then we will both benefit greatly from an alliance.”

“Only if your information is useful. If it is, then be assured that I will see to it you have your vengeance.”

Mara smiled and gave him statistics on Dorshai’s army. She pulled out a map and showed him where the city’s
